When Purchasing Educational Software

There are several considerations in the purchase of educational software. The following tips are intended as guidelines only, but make you realize what you are buying.

These aren't placed in any kind of specific order, but be sure to think about the responses carefully before making your purchase. Your enjoyment and success will profit from a little research done before you make your purchase.

  • Availability: If possible, verify that the item is available right away. Review your shipping options. Is the product available for immediate download?
  • Are you in the market for software by topic or by name? If you know the name of the software you're trying to find, then you've likely already done your research. But, if the only thing you know is you want a software program that would help you to learn Spanish, then carefully examine the options available.
  • Computer System Requirements: Will the software run on your computer? Good educational software web pages will list the system requirements necessary in order to run the software successfully. Always look over this part carefully.
  • Does it suit the user's learning style? Does your child best learn by playing thinking games or taking quizzes or solving puzzles? Look for software programs that feature this type of style.
  • Exchange Policies: Will the supplier allow returns or exchanges? Is it difficult to make a return? If the program you bought does not suit your requirements or doesn't run on your system, you will need to be able to exchange the program for one that you will enjoy.
  • Cost: Have you found the best price for the product? You can search other websites to compare shipping rates and prices. Note features such as no sales tax and free shipping.
  • Age of user: Will your toddler or high school student be running the product? You'll want to be sure the software is appropriate for the age of the user. Sponge Bob might be able to teach your child to type, but you could probably use a more adult typing program!
  • Will it interest the user? Look for software that is self-paced that maybe features a favorite interactive story or cartoon character.

Reviewing these important factors will make sure that you and your children will make the selection that will optimize your learning experience and the usage of your product.
