The History Of The Morris Rocking Chair
Craftsmen in the 18th and beginning of the 19th century felt that heavy padding and think upholstery was the only way to achieve chairs that were the ultimate in luxury and comfort. But around the 1850s, makers began to realize that the design and shape of the rocking chair was what made it so comfortable and not necessarily the heavy padding. With this in mind, the Morris Mission rockers were made.
The arts and crafts movement began in the 1900s and it then became fashionable to manufacture rocking chairs that were not heavily padded and which were not too soft. Even with no upholstery or padding, it was seen that rocking chairs could still be very comfortable. This is the time when Morris rocking chairs became extremely popular. These rocking chairs were the perfect combination of upholstered furniture and excellent designs.
Although Morris rocking chairs were made in many different styles, the most famous were the Morris Mission rockers that were inspired from the Arts and Crafts Movement. Solid oak was used in the construction of these rockers and only the finest genuine leather upholstery. The magnificence of these rocking chairs has to be seen to be believed.
So much is the popularity of the Morris rocking chairs that if you were to look for an authentic Morris Mission rocker today, you would probably have to shell out in excess of $1500 for the rockers. However, the cost of these rocking chairs is well worth it as they can be passed on to future generations as a valuable (and not to mention very relaxing) heirloom!
